An exhibition of historical armor and weapons by master armorer Sergey August is open in the exhibition hall of the northeast wing of Kuressaare Castle.
Sergey August: The Master Who Revived the Medieval Armory Profession
Sergey August is a master currently living in Poland who, from an early age, was fascinated by the history of chivalry, the grandeur of castles, the magnificent armor and the heroes of the era. His passion for the Middle Ages grew into a lifelong vocation: since 2004, he has been making armor and weapons by hand, reviving forgotten techniques and methods once used by the best armorers. Sergey uses methods used centuries ago: manual hot and cold forging, engraving and detailed ornamentation – all done with great precision. Many of his tools are even recreated from museum pieces or historical illustrations to fully follow the traditions of the past. For Sergey, it is more than a craft; it is a mission to preserve the art of armor making as a unique cultural heritage.
Sergey’s masterpieces include over 80 armor sets and 95 objects, including 15th-17th century knightly armor, battle and ceremonial helmets, and even complete horse armor sets. The items are handcrafted with such precision that every detail reflects not only the visual aesthetics of the historical originals, but also their functionality. Unlike most modern replicas, his armor can withstand the rigors of real combat, while maintaining mobility and comfort. His works are not just copies of historical objects, but also convey the spirit of the era, allowing visitors to feel its grandeur and harsh beauty.
Sergey’s work has been recognized throughout Europe. His collections have been exhibited in prestigious museums such as the Warmia-Masurian Museum, the Museum of the Battle of Grünwald, the Royal Castle in Niepołomice, and most recently the Episcopal Castle in Wastseliina. The permanent exhibition of the collection is located in Wiśnicz Castle in Poland. Each exhibition has been an event that has attracted both history buffs and professional historians and armorers.
Sergey August is not just a master armorer among the best in the world, but also a defender of traditions, uniting the past and the present. His works remind us that in the hands of a true master, metal becomes art and history becomes a living legend.
